About
Juliana Blauvelt Ruggiero
Principal designer, Bluefield & Stone Landscape Design.
Juliana spent her formative years in Indonesia, soaking up the lush beauty of tropical jungles, rice paddies, monkey forests, and waterfalls under the formidable backdrop of active volcanoes. Inspired by the incredible wood and stone artisans of Java and the island's natural beauty, she gained an appreciation for how different elements work together to create distinct atmospheres — and for the psychological importance of human scale in the spaces where we enjoy nature.
Returning to the US for high school and college, her natural aesthetic was further shaped by the gorges, waterfalls, and stone formations of Ithaca, New York. She received a BFA from the Cornell University College of Architecture, Art, and Planning, and trained in the John Brookes method of garden design under Duncan Heather at the Oxford College of Landscape Design.
Her travels have drawn her into many a beautiful garden throughout the world — the gardens of Italy, France, England, Australia, Indonesia, and Thailand have all shaped her design sensibilities.
Over the following twenty years she brought these visions to life in many indoor and outdoor spaces — designing smaller, more controlled gardens in the City of Alexandria, then branching into the freedom that larger properties bring. In 2016 she moved her family to a fourteen-acre farm and added to her repertoire further: practical designs that meet the needs of farm animals, pets, children, and adults; permanent systems where problems become solutions; regenerative designs — an environment that is functional, beautiful, and made for the people who live in it to enjoy.
The name
Inspired by her middle name — Blauvelt, Dutch for “blue field” — Juliana founded Bluefield & Stone Landscape Design in 2025. As principal designer, she approaches your property as an artist: identifying its possibilities, honoring its character, history, and occupants, and imagining what it might become.
Through thoughtfully hand-drafted landscape plans, she translates the beauty and romance of nature into spaces that people and their animals can enjoy for years to come — creating order out of chaos, organizing natural and man-made elements into places where her clients can feel at peace, away from the stress and rush of modern life.
Enduring outdoor spaces that invite you out into nature — to linger, gather, wander, and rest.
